Gallery: Ford Model T "RatRod" modernizado Share TweetVisto en eBay: Ford Model T "actualizado" originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 03:59:00 EST. Mars landing has something for fans of space and advanced vehicle technologies Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in Last night, Sunday, August 5, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, lots of people hugged and held their arms high to celebrate a ballsy, historic achievement in space travel. Ten years after the project was launched, NASA's huge Curiosity rover touched down safely on Mars, and the odds of this finishing successfully were quite thin. The 1-ton rover needed to be helped onto the planet's surface by a rocket-powered sky crane, which then flew off to crash land a safe distance away as part of the scheduled plan. Now, the Curiosity has the job of exploring the planet for the next two years looking for carbon-based molecules and other evidence that life exists on Mars. While watching TV coverage and receiving excited text messages from a friend, I was reminded of two people I bet were also watching it - Dr. Peter Diamandis, chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors. Diamandis is known for pushing advanced technology competition, such as the Automotive X Prize, where project teams from universities and automotive R&D competed over two years for a piece of the $10 million prize and the recognition that comes with it. The X Prize Foundation honors innovative technologies "to drive radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity," such as reducing America's oil addiction and climate change. Diamandis believes so much in advanced technology, he's leading a group of supporters (such as Google executives) on the Planetary Resources project. It's a bold venture to explore and extract materials from asteroids that could be valuable resources for the future of batteries, fuel cells, and other electronic devices. As for Elon Musk, he's finding time away from marketing the all-electric Tesla Model S, to oversee his other company, SpaceX. On May 22, the Falcon 9 rocket, built by Musk-led Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, lifted the unmanned Dragon capsule into orbit. The space supply ship, the first private venture of its kind, left for the International Space Station with half a ton of provisions. Things went well enough that on August 3rd, NASA awarded SpaceX $440 million to be part of a project to design and develop the next generation of human spaceflight capabilities. It's probably not a coincidence that Musk, Diamandis, and the project teams needed to make it work, see a correlation between space travel and advanced vehicle technologies.Mars landing has something for fans of space and advanced vehicle technologies originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 20:10:00 EST. Video: Audi ties new TT RS to IMSA GTO-conquering 90 Quattro Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Coupe, Sedan, Performance, Videos, Audi, Racing "A race car has a soul." So says Hand-Joachim Stuck, winner of the 1990 DTM Championship behind the wheel of the iconic Audi 90 Quattro. Not surprisingly, Audi would love you to draw a connection between the soul of the turbocharged five-cylinder-powered Quattro of old with the soul-stirring new TT RS. Successful racing heritage is, after all, a major selling point of this class of cars. But does the old 90 Quattro really have anything to do with the new TT RS? Well, that's debatable. If nothing else, both cars feature a turbocharged five underhood along with all-wheel drive. Quattro GmbH engineer Michael Ganz says that the TT's engine is a direct descendent of the 90's race-winning powerplant... of course, the old IMSA GTO-spec engine boasted some 700 horsepower, which is quite a bit more than the 360 horses spun out by the 2.5-liter in the TT RS. Regardless of your opinions as to the comparison, the video after the break is worth a watch, if for no reason other than the vintage footage of the old 90 Quattro doing its dance against an assortment of period-spec peers. See for yourself in the video below.Continue reading Audi ties new TT RS to IMSA GTO-conquering 90 QuattroAudi ties new TT RS to IMSA GTO-conquering 90 Quattro originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 20:00:00 EST. Auctions: 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder added to RM's Monterey auction Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Ferrari The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder may have been introduced to the mainstream by the classic 1986 John Hughes' film Ferris Bueller's Day Off (of course, that car was a replica), but the iconic convertible has long been one of the most desirable collector cars for those in the know. With a little over 100 built, California Spyders rarely come up for sale, and when they do, they bring big money. Back in 2008, a 1961 model set a record for a car sold at auction with a $10.9 million price tag. Those wanting to add a 250 GT California Spyder to their collection (and have the means) will have a chance later this month in Monterey, with a 1962 SWB (Short Wheel Base) model crossing the block at RM Auctions' event. One of just 37 SWB cars with the more desirable enclosed headlight design, the car is finished in Rosso Corsa paint and has a tan leather interior. Under the hood is Ferrari's legendary 3.0-liter V12, the same powerplant in the 250 GTO. RM estimates the value of the car to be in the $7.5-9 million range.Scroll down to read the official announcement from RM, and check back in a few weeks for our complete Monterey coverage including results from the auction.Continue reading 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder added to RM's Monterey auction1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder added to RM's Monterey auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 19:28:00 EST. Official: Hyundai prices 2013 Santa Fe Sport from $24,450 Filed under: Car Buying, Crossover, HyundaiHyundai has released pricing information for its new five-passenger 2013 Santa Fe Sport, and those the least-expensive way to get your hands on one will cost you $24,450 - but don't forget to add in $825 for destination to any Santa Fe model. For those keeping track, the 2012 Santa Fe starts at $23,225. Opting for all-wheel drive will bring the sticker to $26,200 if you're willing to stick with the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine offering 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. Check the box for the 2.0-liter turbo mill and you'll be met with a $27,700 sticker with front-wheel drive or $29,450 with AWD. Want to pimp your ride with a leather interior with power seats (heated in the front and rear), rear-view camera, navigation screen with eight-inch screen and a panoramic sunroof? Be prepared to add $6,600 to the price of whichever model you've got your heart set on. That means a fully loaded Santa Fe with the turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive will go for over $36,000. We're still waiting for pricing details on the seven-passenger version of the Santa Fe, but we assume it will run a bit higher than this five-passenger Sport model.Hyundai prices 2013 Santa Fe Sport from $24,450 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST. Report: Ford taking Model T-like approach in China Filed under: China, FordFord Motor Company knows a thing or two about building an empire on the back of a rock-bottom-priced automobile sold to customers in rural regions. That's why the company's strategy in China has been baffling to some analysts. Fords are expensive in China, and there are only a few models that you can get there. This is a problem for Ford, especially as the market for new cars in China, once hotter than the sun, cools a bit. With other markets plumbing new depths, Bloomberg reports that Ford is going back to something like Henry's own game plan. If you want to become a volume leader in the world," says Ford Motor China Ltd. Chairman and CEO Joe Hinrichs, "you'll have to compete at the lower price points because that's where the growth is." Ford is spending nearly $5 billion to build factories in Asia, with the goal of bumping sales to five times current levels by 2020. It's a strategy intended to beat back the aggressive moves of General Motors and Volkswagen deeper into the Chinese countryside. "Nearly every established Western automaker has a jump on Ford selling cars in China. Ford hasn't helped itself by offering a limited selection of models at higher prices than the competition, either, though that's beginning to shift with low-priced offerings like the hot-selling Figo B-segment entry. Hinrichs thinks there's gold in the Chinese countryside, and that's why Ford's adding three utility vehicles to its Chinese offerings, importing the Explorer, and expanding local production to get vehicles in Chinese showrooms that don't have import duties tacked on. With the car market in Europe teetering on the razor's edge of failure and North America still an open question, automakers are looking for more steady success, and executives seem to think that Asia has potential. Ford's going to try and make up lots of ground in what may prove to be the fight of its life, rather than merely an exceptionally ambitious growth plan in a market the Blue Oval was late in embracing.Ford taking Model T-like approach in China originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:29:00 EST. Confirmed: Final missing Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Corvette discovered Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Chevrolet You would think that by 2012 - some four decades after the car collecting hobby hit maturity - there would be no important and unaccounted-for cars left to be found. But you would be wrong. Carlisle Events has announced that the No. 1 Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Corvette from 1960 was recently found in a warehouse in Florida, where it had been sitting neglected since the mid-1970s. The car will be on display at this month's Corvettes at Carlisle, with the full backstory on the car, including the identity of its new owner, to be revealed on August 24. The Corvette was one of three such cars racing legend Cunningham entered at Le Mans in 1960 as privateer efforts during General Motors' self-imposed ban on racing. While the other two Chevrolet racers have been discovered and restored, the No. 1 Corvette has been missing since shortly after the race when it was sold off as a street car. When the two-door appears at Carlisle it will be shown in unrestored, "as found" condition. The No. 1 Corvette might not have been discovered if it were not for the car's owner researching the VIN on the BriggsCunningham.com website. That led the website owner to contact Carlisle co-founder Chip Miller, owner of the No. 3 car, who apparently brokered the deal with the Vette's new owner. Plans do call for restoration of the car and a possible reunion with its teammates. Behold, a bicycle hewn from cardboard Filed under: Emerging Technologies, On Two Wheels, Middle East, Videos A bicycle is a pretty low-impact form of transportation, but what if you could reduce its environmental footprint even further? What if, instead of metal and rubber, it was constructed completely of cardboard? Impossible, you say? Maybe not, we reply. Indeed, we have proof. Izhar Gafni had heard about a canoe made of cardboard and there was something about the notion that he just couldn't let go of. It eventually came to him that he should try to build something equally as unexpected with the stuff: a bicycle. The challenge was about as difficult as you can imagine, but the Israeli inventor now has a rolling prototype and the backing to commercialize it. Although it reportedly only requires about $9 of raw material, the finished product might cost somewhere between $60 to $90 when (Okay, if) it finally goes on sale. The plan is for this to happen around the end of 2013. While we sit and ponder what kind of box it might come in, scroll below for a nicely produced little movie about the man and his improbable project.Continue reading Behold, a bicycle hewn from cardboardBehold, a bicycle hewn from cardboard originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:01:00 EST. Report: Fiat may control Chrysler, but it can't reach in its pockets Filed under: Europe, Chrysler, Earnings/Financials, Fiat Despite the fact that Fiat has a controlling stake in Chrysler, the Italian automaker cannot take advantage of the Pentastar's recent success to ease its pain in Europe. Chrysler is on a roll right now, with an improving product portfolio, most recently highlighted by the Dodge Dart small car. The Pentastar brand has combined cash and credit worth $13 billion, but according to a new USA Today report, the Italian automaker cannot plunder Chrysler to address shortfalls on its end. Fiat was forced to cut capital expenditures in 2012 by $612 million, and while the brand posted a $440 million profit, without Chrysler's earnings, it would have been a $302 million loss. So while the temptation might be there to move around funds where it is needed most, protections have been put in place by the U.S. government. According to Marichionne, "Firewalls are up, [Fiat] can't get to it." As part of the original deal with Fiat and the U.S. government bailout, Fiat cannot get access to Chrysler's increasing stockpile of cash. It can, however, keep profits, of which Chrysler earned $436 million in the second quarter off this year.Fiat may control Chrysler, but it can't reach in its pockets originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 17:35:00 EST. Video: NY neighbors turn out to mark passing of 30-year-old Honda Civic Filed under: Aftermarket, Budget, Etc., Videos, Hatchback, Honda, AB-Post Few cars get the eulogy they deserve after a life of serving us. But one 1982 Honda Civic was put to rest last week in Inwood, NY, and got a junkyard sendoff worthy of a lifelong friend. Riddled with rust, the battered and buckled Honda made its way in a New Orleans-style funeral under its own power along Seaman Avenue near 207th Street, where the car had called home for 30 years. Known as "Bluey" for its once sky blue exterior, the car's owner, Harry Ettling, said he was scrapping Bluey out of fear his feet would push through the floor. Of course, from the looks of it, you could push a finger through any of its quarter panels as well. Through the years, Bluey survived a three-car accident in the '80s and then was flipped by rioters in Washington Heights in 1992. But Ettling always got his Civic up and running again and kept on driving her. In the end, the hatchback had 170,000 miles on its odometer - which may not impress some, but 170,000 New York City miles is like 500,000 country miles. As the Civic was towed off, Ettling must have thought about all of the good times Bluey had delivered. When asked about getting a new car, Ettling thought it over. "I'm not getting a new car," Ettling told the New York Daily News. "I need time to heal."Scroll down to check out the funeral procession (complete with band!) and see a second video interview with Bluey's owner.Continue reading NY neighbors turn out to mark passing of 30-year-old Honda CivicNY neighbors turn out to mark passing of 30-year-old Honda Civic originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 16:57:00 EST. ETC: 1:1 scale model parts tree of Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans winner is stunning Filed under: Auctions, Etc., Toys/Games, Design/Style Every once in a while, we come across an automotive tchotchke that makes us go, "Oh. Wow." This is one of them. A work of art produced by Evanta Motor Company - the same that produces the arrestingly gorgeous DB4GT rebody. It's a model of the Aston Martin DBR1/2 that Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori drove to a Le Mans win in 1959. The awesomeness: it is a 1:1 scale model on a parts tree. Yes, as in a life-sized, 20.8-feet long and 11.3-feet high, weighing between 1,100 and 1,320 pounds. Totally handmade in the style of an AirFix kit, the entire DBR1 bodyshell is included, as well as bits such as accurately upholstered seats, four 16-inch wire wheels with Aston Martin knock-offs, a Mota Lita steering wheel and a cap signed by Shelby and Salvadori. Each part is labeled and has an AirFix-like guide number attached as if you were were really going to pore over the instruction sheet for assembly. There is only one of them and it is headed to auction during Goodwood Revival weekend at the Goodwood circuit in the UK. While we think almost any price would be acceptable, the auction guide price is $20,000-£30,000 ($31,286-$46,929 U.S.). That's got us wondering how much of our own junk we can sell to satisfy a desire bordering on can't-live-without. Read more about it in the press release below and check out the beauty in the gallery of Richard Pardon high-res photos.Continue reading 1:1 scale model parts tree of Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans winner is stunning1:1 scale model parts tree of Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans winner is stunning originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 16:31:00 EST. BMW officials say that tax breaks and incentives have made areas like the north-central Mexican state of Queretaro a top contender for the home of the 3 Series sedan and the next generation front-wheel drive 1 Series. BMW's first North American plant, its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, started with 40,000 to 50,000 units annually and has increased as the years went on. According to the report, the proposed Mexico plant would start similarly and eventually grow to 100,000 to 150,000 units annually. For comparison's sake, while Mercedes-Benz will bring production of the C-Class to to Vance, Alabama in 2014, Audi has opted for Mexico for its first North American plant. According to the report, Audi admits Mexico's lower wages were a draw compared to the U.S. U.S. production of BMW is still significant, and there's no reason to think that if a new Mexico plant were to come online that any production would be taken away from the German automaker's stateside operations. BMW built over 275,000 vehicles in the United States in 2011. That's a jump of 75 percent from 2010, and it's only set to grow. BMW says that the plant is set to produce over 300,000 this year. Thus far, Tesla has built 50 Model S units, delivered 29 Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors Sure, the long-term numbers are bigger - 5,000 produced by the end of the year, 20,000 (or maybe even 30,000) in 2013 - but the immediate digits that define the Tesla Model S are quite manageable. Specifically, as of Friday, Tesla has built 50 of the luxury electric vehicles, 29 for retail customers and 21 that are destined for Tesla stores. In the next few weeks, Tesla plans to build 50 more and the pace will increase as needed after that until the automaker hits the aforementioned target numbers, Bloomberg reports. What's perhaps most interesting is that the first 50 vehicles have already been driven more than 39,000 miles, writes George Blankenship, Tesla's vice president of worldwide sales and ownership experience, which is an average of 780 miles per vehicle. Most of those miles were put on at the Get Amped Model S tour, which is out and about introducing the car to potential buyers. The plan for that road show is 5,000 test drives in 45 days. As always, Tesla is thinking big. Still, as of today, you could park every Model S that exists in a moderately sized restaurant parking lot. It won't be long, and this will not be the case. Thus far, Tesla has built 50 Model S units, delivered 29 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 15:58:00 EST. Report: Manchester United fans planning GM boycott Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Chevrolet, GM, UK Fans of the popular British futbol soccer team Manchester United are calling for a boycott of the club and their sponsors in the wake of a recently announced massive General Motors sponsorship deal. According to a Reuters report, the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) is the group calling for the boycott. MUST released a statement last week outlining the group's intentions: "The boycott strategy is intended to send a loud and clear message to the Glazer family and club sponsors that without the support and purchasing power of the fans - the global strength of Manchester United brand doesn't actually exist." Those strong words come in the wake of the General Motors sponsorship deal with Manchester United, which may in part have led to the ousting of marketing boss Joel Ewanick from his post at GM. To get the Chevrolet Bowtie on the club's iconic red jerseys, GM will be $70 million next year, with a 2.1-percent increase each following year. MUST claims that the Glazer family is diluting the team by putting it in debt in the $1.23 billion takeover. The group may be alluding to the upcoming IPO of the team. Manchester United is looking to raise $330 million by trying to move 16.7 million shares on a public offering August 9.Manchester United fans planning GM boycott originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 15:31:00 EST.
